How Hourly Employees Feel Burned Out Just Like Salaried Leaders

Jan 8, 2022

Hourly employees feel burned out.

Burnout doesn’t discriminate between hourly and salary employees.

I was on a call with a potential client, and she said their company was interested in my organization #burnoutprogram for their leaders.

YAY!!

What she said next surprised me. “The rest of our staff are hourly employees. If they aren’t getting paid to work, they aren’t working. So they won’t have burnout.”

This is a misconception that is costing your company hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions (depending on the size of your organization) EVERY YEAR!

** If you want to know just how much it’s costing your organization, connect with me and I can break down the exact numbers.

It doesn’t have to be this way though. You can change this.

Hourly employees feel #burnedout just as much, if not more than, salary employees.

Retail, restaurants, banking, hospitality…

Every industry has hourly employees, and burnout doesn’t discriminate based on how you get paid.

Why do hourly staff get burned out?

Here are the reasons why hourly employees get burned out:

1. Routines—Hourly staff can find themselves doing the same tasks, in the same way, talking about the same things to the same type of people—which all lead to high #burnout. Help them break out of their routines. Have them do something new or in a different way.
2. Boredom—Doing the mundane, repetitive tasks leads to boredom. When you’re not being mentally stimulated, your brain shuts down and mistakes and errors are more likely to happen. Adding frequent break breaks throughout the day for them helps their brains recharge.
3. Undervalued—They often feel undervalued and underappreciated, as though they can easily be replaced. Sometimes what they need most is a “thank you,” “job well done,” or “I see what an incredible job you’re doing.”
4. Pay—Income isn’t as much as salaried staff. They have had to adjust quickly to things, just like leaders, but their pay is lower. Pay can often be a motivator for people.
5. Decision making—They are not usually part of the decision-making process. They can feel as though they don’t matter. They can feel they are not being heard or the organization doesn’t care about them as a whole person. They are only a number. Get them involved in this process. Ask for their opinions, insight, and ideas. Make it a point to ask how they are doing…really doing.
6. Vision—The vision or the organization may not be effectively communicated to them. When people know the vision, and it’s in line with their core values, they feel like they are part of a bigger mission.

Hourly employees are also having to do new things and in different ways and often lack the acknowledgement of their hard work, effective communication skills in creating customer satisfaction, or their excellent leadership in on-the-spot problem solving or in keeping customer loyal.

Your hourly employees are #burnedout and by refusing to acknowledge this, you’re damaging your organization and risking that these stellar employees will go to another organization that appreciates and sees them.

This is a huge opportunity for you. You can reduce your burnout, turnover, and healthcare costs, while creating a happy, healthy, thriving workforce and culture.

Gain the competitive advantage and retain your top hourly employees by helping them prevent burnout, the #1 epidemic in the workforce. Burnout won’t go away on its own, whether your people are hourly or salary. You have to be intentional and strategic with it, and most people don’t have the exact tools, tactics, and tricks to do this.

Which is where my burnout program for organizations come in…

My burnout program is tailored to the participants, so it’s not the same thing for #leaders that it might be for hourly staff.

Why?

Different things lead to their burnout.

So, it’s customized to fit your staff, whether they are hourly or salary.
